Evocation: Empathy for the Working Mother, deliberately located below the painting of a privileged woman breastfeeding her infant, is dedicated to women who sought help from Hull House in the 1890’s—women forced to leave their children unattended while they labored for low wages in sweatshops. The performance acknowledges the exhausting and monotonous work done by these women, keeping them from their families. The sound layers readings extolling idealized domesticity and a crying baby, reflecting the pressures on working mothers at the turn of the 20thc and today.
